Tripataka is releasing the band’s debut album, “Yakiya”. Recorded on the Tall Poppies label, the album captures a blend of original compositions that capture the endless inspiration the band members derive from the music of North and South India, Bali, Brazil, Cuba and many other musics from around the world. Trained in these intercultural forms as well as jazz and European classical music, the breadth of the band members’ combined experience and instrumental resources far surpasses that of a typical contemporary jazz trio.

DIAMOND INTERCHANGETHE BOITE
The origins of this collaboration date back to 1995, when Jonathan returned from the USA to Brisbane and befriended Soumya Chakraverty, who was studying there at the time. A new budding tabla-player, Jonathan benefited from his practice sessions (riyaz) with Soumya’s experienced sarod-playing. Soumya and Jonathan both emigrated to the USA after some years, and this is the first time since the two have been able to collaborate since.
Diamond Interchange represents a willingness to explore the nexus where the musics most native to the four artists meets. More than a superimposition, the classical music of Iran, North and South India, jazz, Western classical and other music will serve as integrative processes that will ask each performer to depart from their comfort zones and interact within hybrid forms. Through composition and improvisation the four artists will attempt to synthesise their unique respective voices into a congruent and contemporary whole.Featuring:

New Springs
New Springs brings together a group of musicians from two sides of the Indian Ocean who have forged a deep and unique musical connection over several decades. These performers from India and Australia will bring the best of their respective musical traditions together for this very special cross-cultural event.
New Springs is led by the legend of Indian music, percussionist Guru Kaaraikkudi Mani, a trailblazing innovator whose music is deeply steeped in the Carnatic tradition. Supported by two leading next-generation musicians, this concert also features B.V. Raghavendra Rao on violin and Guruprasanna on kanjira.The Australian participants in this project – Adrian Sherriff, Sandy Evans, Jonathan Dimond and Adam King – are leading artists in contemporary Australian music who are deeply engaged with Indian traditions.

Tripataka are honoured to team up with renowned South Indian classical violinist B.V. Raghavendra, and mridangam player Ramakrishnan Neelamani, on tour from Chennai, India.
This concert will feature Indian classical compositions and dance, created by the Indian maestros.All proceeds from the concert including all revenue from ticket sales are being donated to Girls from Oz, an organisation which provides activities, to children and young people in remote Australia largely from Indigenous communities. Girls from Oz aims to raise the capacity of young women to set and achieve life goals and make meaningful choices.

Dagbar & DimondThis duo will feature Indian-influenced jazz performed on tabla and electric bass guitar.Jay Dabgar was born into a musical family, and has been living in an environment of music and instruments since childhood. Jay has performed on the tabla (North Indian hand drums) with some of the world’s most-respected artists from different backgrounds, including Indian classical, semi-classical, fusion and world music in Australia. Jay has been teaching tabla and other percussion at his centre 'Melbourne School of Indian Music'.Darby/RobbAurora Darby and Mat Robb are graduates of Melbourne Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Music Degree. Aurora is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist (violin, guitar and piano). She has a fond passion for world music and has studied a range of styles from Western classical, contemporary jazz, Brazilian folk and free improvisation. Aurora teaches voice and violin and has been undertaking formal lessons in South Indian Carnatic Singing since 2013 with Shobha Sekhar, director of the Kalakruthi School of Music. Aurora performs around Melbourne, has featured on many recordings with varying artists and has collaborated with producers overseas.Over the past decade, Mathew Robb has established himself as one of Melbourne’s highly demanded freelance guitarists. Mat's versatility, professionalism and ability to adapt to many different musical environments have all been aspects that have kept this young musician busy for so long. Mat has performed at many events including The Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Darwin Music Festival and Melbourne International Arts Festival. He has recorded electric, acoustic, lap steel, pedal steel guitars for many artists, some of these include: Mojo Juju, Joelistics, Sensible Antixx Ft. N'fa Jones, L-Fresh the Lion and much more.

Sarita McHarg - sitar and voiceComing from the centuries old Indian folk culture, Sarita McHarg brings a unique classical and contemporary experience to the world of music. A true devotional sitarist and vocalist, Sarita has earned several prestigious recognitions including All India Radio Artist, Talent Award from the University of Vikram (India) and State Government – Madhya Pradesh for contribution to the Malwa (folk) music to name but a few.Pantelis Krestas - bouzoukiPantelis Krestas is a first generation Australian musician of Greek descent who plays the string instrument called bouzouki. Krestas has been involved in the Greek Music industry for over 20 years here in Australia, and abroad. Pantelis has performed in a variety of events, such as supporting international acts on stage, composing and performing in live theatre productions, playing in wedding bands for acts across Australia, and in the studio for recording artists. He has also toured with bands internationally.
In 2016, after studying at Melbourne Polytechnic, Pantelis decided to become a full time musician and teacher of bouzouki in Melbourne, Australia. In 2020, Pantelis released his first EP titled, “NK compositions”. The EP was a studio recording of the theatre compositions that he composed and performed in 2016.Jonathan Dimond - bass guitar and tablaJonathan performs on electric bass guitars and tabla, drawing on decades of experience in cross-cultural collaborations. Jonathan Dimond is a multi-instrumentalist composer/performer, who brings together the worlds of Western classical, jazz and intercultural musics. Since undertaking formal studies in North Indian classical music in 1993, Dimond’s compositions have been influenced by raga, and the rhythmic cycles and devices associated with both North and South Indian classical music.
His formal musical education includes a PhD in Composition, Master of Music and Post Graduate Diploma of Music from New England Conservatory (USA), and a Bachelor of Music.
An important facet of Dimond’s work is in the area of education, being involved in University music education since 1996. Dimond is currently senior lecturer and head of program at Melbourne Polytechnic, where he runs the Bachelor of Music degree. He also ran the Bachelor of Music (Jazz) at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University from 1997 prior to returning to the U.S.A. in 2002.
Jonathan performs many of his original compositions with the ensemble Tripataka.

Tripataka present at the 2023 Australasian Jazz and Improvisation Research Network Conference - Roads, Bridges, and Intersections. Broadly speaking, this theme asks participants to think about infrastructure: the systems put in place by individuals, communities, presenters, governments, funding groups, and other organizations, that enable artists to communicate, collaborate, and develop their careers. We hope that this theme will motivate discussions at the local, national, and global level over the practical challenges and possibilities associated with the current political and cultural economy. Importantly, this theme is intended to encourage critical perspectives that question established assumptions and attitudes, as well as words and music that reveal the transformative possibilities of a more inclusive network for jazz and improvised music – one that values and promotes the expressions of, and collaborations between, practitioners from diverse personal, social, and cultural backgrounds.
